Resilience Amidst Ruins: Supporting Myanmar’s Displaced Monastic Communities

In the quiet corners of Myanmar, far from the bustling cities, lies a story of resilience and compassion that often goes unnoticed. This is the story of the monastic communities in Kyaukme and Bagan, who, amidst the turmoil of conflict and natural disasters, continue to be pillars of strength and hope for their people. It is also a story of how your donation was able to make a real difference of the lives of these people, at this most difficult time. We share the following story from a local team leader who provided us with this update.

Recently, we reconnected with a leading executive member of our team deeply involved in aiding displaced individuals in Kyaukme. Due to disruptions in cell phone and internet services, communication has been challenging. Despite these obstacles, the charity has tirelessly supported two key monasteries, both of which were forced to relocate to rural areas following devastating bombings. These monasteries, once home to over 300 monks and novices, now find themselves in safer, yet less accessible villages.

The sudden displacement has not only uprooted the monastics but has also brought about significant logistical challenges. The rural monasteries, though safe, lack the infrastructure and resources to sustain the influx of monks and novices. Food and personal requisites have become pressing needs, with local donations falling short of what is required to support these communities.

As if the conflict weren’t enough, the monastic communities in Bagan have been hit hard by severe flooding as well! The monastic compounds in Old Bagan and Myinkabar, revered for their historical and cultural significance, are now submerged, their wells contaminated by river water. Access to clean drinking water has become a critical issue.

In a remarkable display of community spirit, locals have been transporting 20-liter bottles of purified water across the Ayeyarwady River twice daily, ensuring that the monks and laypeople have enough to drink. However, the need far exceeds the current supply. To adequately support these communities, we aim to provide 1,000 bottles of purified water, ensuring a steady supply for at least the next week.

The monastic communities of Kyaukme and Bagan are not just religious institutions; they are sanctuaries of peace, education, and culture. Their resilience in the face of adversity is a testament to their unwavering commitment to their spiritual and humanitarian duties. Yet, they cannot do it alone.

We call upon our global community to extend a helping hand. Whether through donations of food, personal requisites, or funds for clean drinking water, every contribution counts! In these trying times, your support can make a tangible difference in the lives of these monastics and the lay people who depend on them.

In the words of our friends in Kyaukme, “We wish you all happiness, healthiness, and mindfulness.” Let us embody these values as we come together to support those who dedicate their lives to preserving them.
